Training --- DataViz - Data visualisation and reporting principles

DataViz – Data visualisation and reporting principles

To deliver business value, information should be tailored to the needs of the audience and presented in a way that is clear, understandable and engaging.

The aim of the training is to impart knowledge related to reporting. Participants will learn both the principles of selecting information content and how to present data in a way that is comprehensible to the recipient.

Practical tools related to report development processes will be the Value Based Design (VBD) methodology with the support of the International Business Communication Standards (IBCS) visualisation standards.

    Training programme

    1. Making inferences from data

An example of having data from different sources and potential ways of combining data in decision support will be presented.

    2. Misinformation

Participants will be introduced to situations when information transfer is manipulated. Situations will be shown where a report or information message needs to be, restructured so that users are not presented with a distorted message.

    3. Principles of report design

During this section, participants will learn the basic principles of report design:

    • The importance of context
    • Human perception and habits
    • Selection of chart type

    4. Value Based Design

This section will provide participants with an overview of the methodology for selecting the information presented on reports. The methodology is based on well-defined steps leading from the collected requirements to the shape of the final report or management dashboard.

    5. Standardisation of data visualisation

This section presents selected principles for building reports on the basis of the IBCS (International Business Communication Standards) study. The guidelines contained in this study are becoming more and more widely recognised, particularly in controlling, and are being implemented in leading reporting tools.

    6. Practical exercises

Each participant will be given a set of hypothetical requirements and their task will be to lay out the content and design of the report. Once this has been done, the group will move on to a discussion of the work done, indicating good and bad practices applied.

    7. Discussion of acquired knowledge and Cogit implementation experiences

The final part of the training will cover questions and practical approaches to reporting in different types of organisations.
